English Version

Flavoxate HCl 100 mg

What is Flavoxate HCl 100 mg?

Flavoxate HCl 100 mg is a urinary tract smooth-muscle antispasmodic used for the symptomatic relief of dysuria, urinary urgency, frequency, nocturia, suprapubic pain, and urinary incontinence. It relieves urinary tract symptoms but does not treat an underlying infection. (DailyMed)

Mechanism of Action

Flavoxate Hydrochloride is a synthetic urinary tract spasmolytic that acts directly on urinary tract smooth muscle to counteract spasm.

This action may reduce urinary urgency, frequency, dysuria, and discomfort associated with urinary tract irritation.

In a small clinical study, onset of action occurred at approximately 55 minutes, with peak effect at approximately 112 minutes. (DailyMed)

Antimicrobial Spectrum

None.

Flavoxate HCl is not an antibacterial, antifungal, or antiviral agent. It does not eradicate organisms responsible for urinary tract infections.

When symptoms are associated with a bacterial urinary tract infection, appropriate antimicrobial treatment may be required in addition to symptomatic treatment with Flavoxate. (DailyMed)

Pharmacokinetics

Available prescribing information contains limited pharmacokinetic data.

In a study involving 11 healthy male subjects, onset of action occurred at approximately 55 minutes, peak effect at approximately 112 minutes, and approximately 57% of Flavoxate HCl was excreted in the urine within 24 hours. (DailyMed)

Contraindications

Flavoxate HCl is contraindicated in patients with pyloric or duodenal obstruction, obstructive intestinal lesions or ileus, achalasia, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, or obstructive uropathies of the lower urinary tract. (DailyMed)

Precautions

Flavoxate should be used cautiously in patients with suspected glaucoma.

Patients should be advised that drowsiness and blurred vision may occur. If affected, they should not drive, operate machinery, or perform activities requiring clear vision or full alertness.

Mental confusion may occur, particularly in elderly patients. (DailyMed)

Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Animal reproductive studies have not demonstrated fetal harm; however, adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Flavoxate should therefore be used during pregnancy only when clearly needed.

Breastfeeding: It is not known whether Flavoxate is excreted in human milk. Caution is advised when the medicine is administered to a breastfeeding woman. (DailyMed)

Adverse Effects

Reported adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, vertigo, headache, drowsiness, nervousness, and mental confusion, particularly in elderly patients.

Tachycardia, palpitations, urticaria, dermatologic reactions, blurred vision, increased ocular tension, and disturbances of visual accommodation have also been reported.

A reversible case of leukopenia has been reported rarely. (DailyMed)

Overdose

Human overdose information is limited, and it is not known whether Flavoxate HCl is dialyzable.

Management of significant overdose should consist of appropriate medical assessment and supportive and symptomatic treatment. (DailyMed)

Drug Interactions

The current DailyMed prescribing information does not identify a specific list of clinically established drug interactions.

Patients should nevertheless inform healthcare professionals about all medicines they are taking, particularly medicines that may contribute to drowsiness, blurred vision, or urinary dysfunction.

Drug Name and Strength

Flavoxate Hydrochloride 100 mg

Flavoxate Hydrochloride 100 mg oral tablets are registered in Thailand according to the Thai FDA drug database. (ข้อมูลยาแห่งชาติ)

Indications

Flavoxate HCl is indicated for the symptomatic relief of dysuria, urgency, nocturia, suprapubic pain, urinary frequency, and urinary incontinence that may occur with cystitis, prostatitis, urethritis, and urethrocystitis/urethrotrigonitis.

It is not indicated as definitive treatment of urinary tract infection, although it may be used together with medicines directed at the underlying infection when appropriate. (DailyMed)

Recommended Dosage

For adults and children over 12 years of age, the labeled oral dose is 100–200 mg three or four times daily.

Patients with fever, chills, flank pain, hematuria, inability to urinate, or worsening urinary symptoms should undergo medical evaluation for infection, urinary stones, obstruction, or other underlying conditions.

Caution is also required in patients with suspected glaucoma and in patients who develop significant blurred vision or other ocular symptoms. (DailyMed)
